About us

Net Educational Systems Ltd, trading as 'Nessy', is a UK based company that makes fun educational software for children at home and school. Nessy products are developed in conjunction with the Bristol Dyslexia Centre, ensuring that educational content is effective and relevant to the school curriculum. The Nessy titles have been designed to help dyslexics but are enjoyed and used by all children.

Bristol Dyslexia Centre (BDC), est. 1989, has 30 teaching staff and 250 students, who attend both part-time and full-time (Belgrave School).  The Centre works with all ages (6-60) and has helped thousands of children, students and adults to attain exceptional results.

Philosophy

Nessy tries to encourage a love of learning through fun games and a quirky humour.  Products provide effective learning by using incremental, multi-sensory strategies.  The resources are developed through practical teaching before being made into products.  We aim to produce high quality, good value for money products, supported by good customer service (no automated phones, same day turn around for orders and email response).  Nessy products should always be simple to navigate.

Enviromental policy

Nessy is committed to minimising our enviromental impact. All Nessy products are made in the UK using local businesses who have made a similar commitment to using recycled and sustainably sourced materials.

Location

Nessy shares a tall Victorian building with the Bristol Dyslexia Centre but we have the top floor. We are lucky to have great views of Durdham Downs in front and at the back we can see the city landmarks stretching away below us.

History

Nessy was started in October 1999 to publish the games and resources created by Pat Jones in her role as Principal and founder of the Bristol Dyslexia Centre.  The motivation came when one of Pat’s card games, the Chain Game, was published by a large educational catalogue without being attributed to her.

The name

‘Nessy’ came from an acronym for the full company name, Net Educational SYStems, which is ironically the sort of letter sequence mix-up that might be made by a dyslexic.  Although not a perfect acronym it was thought to be close enough.  Nessy was a friendly name that made people smile and ask again to make sure they had heard correctly.

Mike Jones is the creative director of Nessy.

I hated School.  I got stuck on Ladybird book 1 while everyone else raced ahead.  I always got 0 in the weekly spelling test, despite copying from my friend (I couldn’t even do that right) and was humiliated in front of the class by having to call out my answer. I was the dunce of the class. Frustration became anger tantrums.  I was finally kicked out of School for fighting with one of the kids teasing me for being ‘stupid’.  I found out I was dyslexic when I was eight.  I was home educated, using the Alpha to Omega system for teaching dyslexics, before returning to mainstream school. I was able to cope and even excel but school is always a difficult place for dyslexics.  After School I went to art college then I studied Law. My head teacher had said I wasn’t clever enough to do law so I had something to prove.  After college I did some voluntary work at the Bristol Dyslexia Centre and realised great things were being done that turned lives around. Inspired, I trained to teach dyslexics.  I taught at the Centre for over ten years, during that time some children I helped had the same teacher who tortured me with those spelling tests!  This made me determined to turn the innovative resources and games used at the Centre into the Nessy Learning Programme so that dyslexics everywhere could benefit.  Now I design the Nessy range of educational software and characters set in the mythical land of Ness.
